Description

Product Description

In Bird Songs, ornithologist Les Beletsky profiles 250 birds alongside colorful illustrations, and includes a digital audio player that provides the corresponding song for each of the 250 birds.

Drawing from the collection of the world-renowned Macaulay Library at the Cornell Lab of Ornithology, Bird Songs presents the most notable North American birds—including the rediscovered ivory-billed woodpecker—in a stunning format.

Renowned ornithologist Les Beletsky provides a succinct description of each of the 250 birds profiled, with an emphasis on their distinctive songs. Lavish full-color illustrations accompany each account, while a sleek, built-in digital audio player holds 250 corresponding songs and calls. In his foreword, North American bird expert and distinguished natural historian Jon L. Dunn shares insights gained from a lifetime of passionate study.

Complete with the most up-to-date and scientifically accurate information, Bird Songs is the first book to capture the enchantment of these beautiful birds in words, pictures, and song.

Review

Here are splendid color illustrations of 250 species of birds, some showing only the male and others showing both the male and female. Drawing from the Macaulay Library at the Cornell Lab of Ornithology, the book is divided into four parts: seabirds, shorebirds, and water birds; forest birds; woodland birds; and open-country birds. With each illustration is a description of the bird''s range in the U.S. and Canada, and its ecology and behavior. The profiles emphasize the birds'' vocalizations—both songs and calls—which can be heard on an audio component that comes with the book. By using this digital audio technology, readers will be able to relate the songs and calls to the birds'' appearances. Beletsky, a notable bird biologist, has written a fascinating book that will aid bird-watchers.” —George Cohen, Booklist

Bird Songs is a significant new learning device for birdwatchers. By bringing digital audio technology to the printed book, you can relate the songs and calls of those birds you see from the comfort of your armchair. This unique and informative tool, combining text, illustrations, and sounds, should be on every coffee table."  —Dr. Paul Green, Director of Citizen Science, National Audubon Society

About the Author

Les Beletsky is a professional bird biologist and natural history expert. Prior to taking up nature writing, he conducted twenty years of behavioral research on birds, concentrating on bird vocalizations and breeding behavior. He has written or co-written more than thirty-five papers and two books on birds, one of which won an award from The Wildlife Society as "outstanding wildlife ecology book of the year." An avid visitor of bird-watching and wildlife locations across the globe, he has made multiple trips to the Americas, Africa, Asia, and Australia. Detecting a need for comprehensive, single-volume guides for travelers interested in wildlife, he created and edited the Ecotravellers’ Wildlife Guide series (currently published as the Travellers’ Wildlife Guides by Interlink Books). He has written or co-written ten of these wildlife travel guides, which illustrate and describe in detail all the kinds of wildlife, birds in particular, that a traveler to a particular state or country might encounter.

It is NOT necessary to press the button 250 times; beautiful book

This book is beautifully illustrated, informative, easy-to-use and well-made. I bought it for my bird-loving 85-year old father and he really likes it as well. (As I''m typing this, I spotted a red-shouldered hawk perched in a tree in our yard and Dad and I had fun cracking the front door open, playing the appropriate call and watching the bird react.) I hesitated to buy this book only because of reviews claiming it was necessary to press the button 250 times to scroll through the calls. This seemed improbable, so I gave it a chance. Sure enough, while there isn''t a number pad, the calls scroll quickly if you hold down the forward or backwards buttons. I timed it and it takes about 15 seconds to scroll through all 250 bird calls. The calls are on a loop, so it''s only one click away between call #1 and call #250 if you just press the backwards/reverse button. Also, it is necessary to pull out the small, clear tab that protects the battery prior to first use. All in all, this is a gorgeous, fascinating book and a great gift. (I can hear a series of bird calls from Dad using the book downstairs as I finish this.)

Having worked in a library for many years, this is a heavy book with poor binding. I hope the recipient of this gift enjoys it but I doubt if it will hold up to much handling. Too bad since there are a lot of birds to listen to. Also, if you are listening to a bird on page 200, you have to tap the counter to that number to hear the bird. Kind of regret this order for the price, condition and operation.

This was a gift for my blind MIL. She likes it. Its enjoyable to sit and go with her through the pages. My ONLY complaint is the index! Its listed by description and type, verses “type, description “. For example, when you want to look up “Loon”, it is listed under something like“Southern Loon”; it makes for a lot of needless time searching, because you naturally want to look under “L”, not “S”.

No number pad
Reviewed in the United States on November 18, 2019
You can''t just type in the number corresponding with the birds. You have to actually press the plus button however many times it takes to get to your bird song. So if you want to see a bird on page 212, you''ll need to press the button 212 times! I have to return this.

The book and it''s bird tweets is really great. My only complaint is the very small print in the index, and in the reading. The print is not black on white, it is a lighter color on white, and therefore hard to read. It would be nice if there was a map picture on each bird page to indicate where they winter, and where they are in the summer. I need to refer to another bird book at the same time.

How does one activate the audio portion of this book? No instructions or directions were provided. Am I supposed to remove the plastic covering the speaker section? Does the book require a battery? Would really appreciate some answers!

There were great reviews on this when we bought it for our daughter for Christmas. The first one, the device that makes the sounds didn''t work. We tried replacing the batteries and of course we read the directions. The replacement that just came unfortunately has the same issues. Clearly this product has some poor quality control as the 2 most recent reviews at this time are having the same issue. We will be returning this device and not wasting any more of our time with it.

Introduction

Of all the different animals, birds are arguably best known for their amazing and varied sounds. Often, it is their sounds that we remember best. Whether it is the wailing laugh of a Common Loon, the bugling of a flock of swans or long-legged Sandhill Cranes, the honking of a flock of Canada Geese, or the ethereal of haunting songs of the many thrushes, the songs of birds captivate us.

A Few Birds Profiled

Pied-Billed Grebe

Announcing its territory, a Pied-Billed Grebe gives its caow caow caow song.

Double-Crested Cormorant

Double-crested Cormorants are often silent, but at nesting sites and roosts and sometimes while feeding in flocks, they produce a variety of deep, guttural calls, some of them gruntlike.

Great Blue Heron

The Great Blue Heron's most commonly heard vocalization, often given when alarmed and in fright, is a hoarse frawnk.

Glossy Ibis

Adult Glossy Ibis are usually silent but they sometimes utter crowlike croaking calls and, when in flocks, subdued chattering or grunting sounds.
