Description

Product Description

Veteran financier James P. Owen shares his new perspective on Wall Street and how the Code of the West can and should be applied to business practices and the corporate world. The book is beautifully illustrated with David Stoecklein''s western photography

From the Back Cover

Having been rocked by one damaging revelation of misbehavior after another, Wall Street is in a state of crisis. Investors are disgusted by the misdeeds of a few and suspicious of the industry at large. Every firm finds its integrity open to question. Regulators are up in arms. And the industry is facing billions of dollars in costs to comply with a floodtide of new regulations.
But imagine what could happen if Wall Street firms looked back to a simpler time when a handshake was enough to seal a deal, and right and wrong were as clear as black and white. What if executives, portfolio managers, analysts, and traders decided that some things aren’t for sale? What if every major investment firm agreed to live by the principle that the client always comes first?
In words and images, Cowboy Ethics explores the life and code of the working cowboy as a source of inspiration pointing the industry to a way out of its troubles.
The book is intended as the catalyst for a movement to transform the industry – not with the carrot and stick, but from the inside out – one person, firm, and organization at a time.

I have been a city boy all my life but I have always been fascinated by cowboys and the western genre. Like most youngsters in my age group I grew up with numerous old time cowboy shows and movies. Roy Rogers, Hopalong Cassidy, Rocky Lane and many other cowboys were my heroes. In my advanced age I have also taken to reading numerous westerns. I recently picked up this book (Cowboy Ethics: What Wall Street can learn from the Code of the West by James P. Owen, with the photographs by David R. Stoecklein) at a bargain price on Amazon.

This book is full of great photographs showing the cowboy lifestyle. It was written by a Wall Street guy who was greatly influenced by the movie “Open range” as well as other western movies. Like many people he has always had a passion for things about the old west and decided to incorporate the code of the cowboy into his Wall Street philosophy.

This 82 page large size book reviews the ten topic areas of “the code of the west” in combination with the fantastic photographs. The gems of wisdom in the code are as follows:

Live each day with courage. Take pride in your work. Always finish what you start. Do what has to be done. Be tough, but fair. When you make a promise, keep it. Ride for the brand. Talk less and say more. Remember that some things aren’t for sale. Know where to draw the line.
If you are into the western genre and the code of the west, you will like this book.

Rating: 4 Stars. Joseph J. Truncale (Author: The Samurai Soul: An old warrior’s poetic tribute).

I could hardly put it down as I read on my iPad this past weekend. The stories and examples are true to life. Having grown up with the Cowboy way of life in Amarillo via my dad, I could readily identify the core that Jim Owen discussed. As a therapist I related his revelations about "We don''t need more rules and regulations to overwhelm and break us, we need inner ethics and values." (I summarized his notes). I related this to what I teach my therapy clients about Internal (PRINCIPLES that never waver) locus of control vs. external locus of control (what the outer world or other people want).

Excellent stories and principles. This is definitely one to read often, recommend to others and send as a gift!

A friend initially let me borrow his copy from his office reception area. I then bought copies for our two adult children, plus several colleagues and team members. Excellent book for anyone wanting to lead a principled life. This book and "Cowboy Values", also by James P. Owen, have become two of my favorite books. The author has done an excellent job in confirming the ethics and values that represent America and are represented in the working cowboy. The code of the West is prominently displayed on my office wall. Excellent!!

The ethics and values expressed are those that many of us grew up with and witnessed in our parents. So the message isn''t: "Wow, I never thought of that." The message is "Wow, what a great job of capturing the essence of the ethics and values I grew up with and work to live by." Perfect gift for your children, colleagues and any business leader. While the message stirs the heart, the photography is superb and does the same. Loved it.

Between Mr. Owen''s words and Mr. Stoecklein''s great photographs, one will find a great little book of distilled genius---for any industry. I''ve given this book as a gift to my children and clients alike. Most could learn from the "Cowboy Code" described---and most would thrive. If you''re casting about for a young person, and if they like ponies and cowboys---get this book---and read it---the words are just as compelling as the photographs. There''s a lot we could learn from the "simple" life of cowboys. Good stuff. Timeless wisdom----to be used.

This little book is a visual treat, even if some of the photos have been used before in other Stoecklein books. The Text is very simple and obvious, but doesn''t distract from the photos. Maybe Wall Street-types need simple writing in order to understand what the author is getting at. I doubt that this book will make greedy people any more honest, but at least James Owen tried.

The Wyoming legislature each received a copy of Cowboy Ethics, and a copy made it''s way to my Pastor.
After reading it he was inspired by James Owen. We are going to use the Code of the West within the Cowboy Ethics to shape our summer series. Taking a weekend to dive into each of the 10 codes. We will be using the book for inspiration and adding scripture to each of the 10 codes of the west.
It should be an exciting series coming in July & Aug 2010 at Cheyenne Hills Church!

Klare Kaufempfehlung!!!
