Leo Lionni’s Caldecott Honor–winning story about a little mouse who gathers something unusual for the long winter is celebrating its fiftieth birthday!

Winter is coming, and all the mice are gathering food . . . except for Frederick. But when the days grow short and the snow begins to fall, it’s Frederick’s stories that warm the hearts and spirits of his fellow field mice. Winner of a 1967 Caldecott Honor,  Frederick has been cherished by generations of readers.

About the Author

Leo Lionni, an internationally known designer, illustrator, and graphic artist, was born in Holland and lived in Italy until he came to the United States in 1939. He was the recipient of the 1984 American Institute of Graphic Arts Gold Medal and was honored posthumously in 2007 with the Society of Illustrators’ Lifetime Achievement Award. His picture books are distinguished by their enduring moral themes, graphic simplicity and brilliant use of collage, and include four Caldecott Honor Books: Inch by Inch, Frederick, Swimmy, and A lexander and the Wind-Up Mouse. Hailed as “a master of the simple fable” by the Chicago Tribune, he died in 1999 at the age of 89.

This book is the antithesis to the ant and the grasshopper story. While the other mice work and prepare for winter, Frederick lays around, seemingly asleep, and “gathers words, sunlight, and colors” for winter. In the end when the mice run out of food, Frederick literally emanates light and colors and recites poetry, thereby brightening the dark, gloomy winter for his family.

I have no problem with liberal arts, or a life that doesn''t add “material value” as some of the reviews here have said. But to be a poet or an artist takes hard work. For a small child (the intended audience), the only message they''ll receive from this is that you can lay around and do nothing and still provide value later. This book is garbage, don''t buy it for your kids.

A new acquaintance recently introduced me to "Frederick," a charming, very short children''s picture book about a family of field mice who are preparing for the winter. One of them, a young mouse named Frederick, does not do much work and appears to be shirking his responsibilities. Frederick explains to his skeptical family that he IS working by quietly gathering imaginary sun rays for the cold winter days to come.

The book ends with the mice experiencing a tough winter, and then being inspired to carry on by a poem Frederick has created that grew out of his meditations when his family members thought he was being lazy. It''s a really nice story about how we all have different ways of making contributions, and that important work is not always readily visible, especially creative endeavors.

The book also has some exercises for children, including one that guides a participant into writing a poem. If you read this story to a child and then make a poem together, it''ll make a sweet project! A few of the words in the story are a bit advanced for young children, which offers a nice vocabulary building opportunity and does not detract from the story.

What I like best about "Frederick" is that it acknowledges that we humans are not all the same, and that we need our different talents and personalities to "make it through the winter." It might be especially nice to share with that child in your life who "marches to the beat of a different drummer."

This was my favorite book as a child (some 50 years ago!!), so when I discovered that my 2-year old nephew was already obsessed with books (as I was at his age), this was the first book I thought of for him - along with several other books by Leo Lionni - for Christmas. He LOVES it!! Leo Lionni as a wonderful way of normalizing the "outcast" - he makes it okay to be "different." What could be better for a child? I can''t recommend a children''s book more highly than this one!!

Poor Ending, Crudely Illustrated

Surprised that this book got such good recommendations. It is not good at all and has a bad ending. The illustrations are crude and not very visually appealing to the intended age range of the work. Hard pass.

I bought this for my son for school and it arrived like this. The front has a crease in it and the back was folded inward. I''m trying to teach my son how to take care of books and keep them nice and I''m pretty disappointed. Other than that the story is nice and he loves it.

I used read this story as a young child and I loved it, I also loved the bright and colorful pictures. I have been searching for this book for a while now, and I am so glad I have finally found it. I now read this story to my 19 month old as a bedtime story and she loves it too. Hopefully one day (far, far away) she will read it to her little ones as well. This is a must have children''s book as, it teaches children it is ok to stop and enjoy the Earth''s beautiful environment, and its also ok to be unique. I live by the words of this book, and I hope it is available for generations to come.

This is a truly lovely book and I''m surprised I haven''t come across it before. The art work is original and charming. The story describes how a family of field mice work all summer to gather in food for the winter - all except Frederick. He has different gifts which come into their own in the long winter months. Children at my Stay & Play group (under 5s) loved it - as did my 9 year old grandson.

A beautiful unusual little tale. The value of Frederick''s observations is apparent when his poetry is revealed to the others during their darkest times. I love that through this book, children will begin to understand how nourishing the mind and making emotional connections through art/music/poetry is just as important to happiness as having food to eat and somewhere to stay. We realise this need gradually as we grow up, and start to identify which examples of these are moving and meaningful to each of us, so I wouldn''t expect small children to fully grasp the concept, but it will show them that there is more to life''s pleasures than having physical requirements met.
