Description

Product Description

On Combat looks at what happens to the human body under the stresses of deadly battle the impact on the nervous system, heart, breathing, visual and auditory perception, memory - then discusses new research findings as to what measures warriors can take to prevent such debilitations so they can stay in the fight, survive, and win. A brief, but insightful look at history shows the evolution of combat, the development of the physical and psychological leverage that enables humans to kill other humans, followed by an objective examination of domestic violence in America. The authors reveal the nature of the warrior, brave men and women who train their minds and bodies to go to that place from which others flee. After examining the incredible impact of a few true warriors in battle, On Combat presents new and exciting research as to how to train the mind to become inoculated to stress, fear and even pain. Expanding on Lt. Col. Grossman s popular "Bulletproof mind" presentation, the book explores what really happens to the warrior after the battle, and shows how emotions, such as relief and self-blame, are natural and healthy ways to feel about having survived combat. A fresh and highly informative look at post traumatic stress syndrome (PTSD) details how to prevent it, how to survive it should it happen, how to come out of it stronger, and how to help others who are experiencing it. On Combat looks at the critical importance of the debriefing, when warriors gather after the battle to share what happened, critique, learn from each other and, for some, begin to heal from the horror. The reader will learn a highly effective breathing technique that not only steadies the warrior s mind and body before and during the battle, but can also be used afterwards as a powerful healing device to help separate the emotion from the memory. Concluding chapters discuss the Christian/Judeo view of killing in combat and offers powerful insight that Lt. Col. Grossman has imparted over the years to help thousands of warriors understand and come to terms with their actions in battle. A final chapter encourages warriors to always fight for justice, not vengeance, so that their remaining days will be healthy ones filled with pride for having performed their duty morally and ethically. This information-packed book ploughs new ground in its vision, in its extensive new research and startling findings, and in its powerful, revealing quotes and anecdotes from top people in the warrior community, people who have faced the toxic environment of deadly combat and now share their wisdom to help others. On Combat is easy to read and powerful in scope. It is a true classic that will be read by new and veteran warriors for years to come.

I remember a quote by the legendary ancient Greek philosopher of Athens, Thucydides;
"The society that separates its scholars from its warriors will have its thinking done by cowards and its fighting by fools."

A person whose life revolves around daily self-administered and/or guided training alike is a warrior. Someone whose lifestyle revolves around the quick and efficient resolution of violent conflict to protect something or someone. For most of us, it is our families and ourselves, but it can range from country to the rule of law or a higher purpose like a Constitution or God. In any case, the most effective warriors are the best tacticians. And being a tactician means being a thinker, and the bearer of a mind fortified with the attainment of knowledge just as a warrior''s body must be fortified by physical fitness training.

LTC Grossman is a consummate warrior-scholar, and I found this book impossible to put down. I learned more about the most efficient way to think, move, act, and how to pace myself in ways I was never taught in the Army as a Cavalry Scout. For anyone who aspires to a deep understanding of the study of battle, especially individual or small unit combat, this book will become a Bible to you. Of all the treatises on combat I have read, I have never been so impressed as I was with this book. 100.00/100.00.

This is a must read if you are in any profession that involves danger or a citizen that wants to be part of the solution and not the problem. The thing I thought was amazing in this book is the description of the psychological and physiological responses to a violent and fearful encounter. If you read all about this you will see that many of the police involved shootings were because of nature and not a war on the minorities in this country. It also allows you to see that the police need way better training to be able to counter these byproducts of their dangerous profession.

I am torn on the authors theory that violent movies and headlines are causing the youth to go and shoot up schools. I think that that kind of stuff is probably not healthy but something else must be going on to make a person commit this type of horror.

The chapters on PTSD and veterans coming home are also very timely. It will allow the regular Joe like me to better understand some of the issues our veterans and police are dealing with.

As a police officer I consider this book a must read because it helps you understand what your body goes through during high stress encounters. I have found myself wondering why my body shakes in the past during the presence of danger, and this book helped me understand as well as taught me how to calm myself down. It has helped me keep my head in the game and stay focused in situations where any reasonable person would be scared. Lt. Col. Dave Grossman does a fantastic job of explaining why your body reacts the way it does.

This audio book is read by Grossman himself, its almost as good as attending one of his fantastic seminars.
The chapters are fairly short so it lends itself well to listening to in the car and not losing track of the content.
And, of course, the content is PHENOMENAL! If you have ever read anything of Grossman''s you know hat to expect, high level, intensive content with numerous references to source material (none of that "here''s a fact - take my word for it.)
If you are a Law Enforcement Officer , a soldier, a Sheepdog, or any other form of Warrior, this should be required reading, but listening is even better!

Alot has been said in regards to this book both good and bad. I have used this book and have gone back to reference it countless times over the years. While there is certainly merit to some of the less-than-favorable reviews I''ve always viewed this book in generally favorable light. This purchase was actually to replace my original copy which has endured countless reads and thumbing through over the years. My two complaints with this most recent Edition lie in the very poor binding which I doubt will last nearly as long as my previous copy. Also when I purchased this book the picture of the item led me to believe it would be personalized an autographed which it was not. Aside from that this book is a must-read.

Dave Grossman is probably the best authority on PTSD. You can find his lectures on youtube if you''re on the fence. He has a unique perspective, as he speaks from first hand experience with all of these matters, instead of purely from academic theory. Refreshing for anyone who is a bit tired of academia. Your professors will either love it, or hate it, depending on their bias and background. So use wisely in research papers.

That being said, I don''t agree with David Grossman on 100% of the content or details of his book, but he is the most accurate I''ve seen so far. I''d give him a 90-95%, which is astounding.

"On Combat" and "On Killing" by Lt. Col. David Grossman should be mandatory reading before anyone picks up a gun for self defense. I''ve taught the permit to carry certification course in Minnesota for over 10 years. I know that most people taking this course think they know what they are getting into. They don''t. They''ll spend a fortune on guns and holsters but won''t spend a nickel on the preparation of their mind and body. I literally pray that they will never need to defend themselves. Lt. Col. Grossman presents his years of research as well as that of other experts in the field of combat in an easy to read and digest format. Along with his co author, David Christiansen, he shows that without proper training of the mind as well as the body, we are naturally opposed to taking a human life no matter what the justification. All the shooting competition in the world won''t help unless your mind and body are prepared. As he states, "You are the weapon. The gun is a tool". I cannot express how very important "On Combat" is to the "warrior" in all of us who desires to defend our loved ones as well as ourselves. Please read this book.

People think they understand violence in the human animal. People are ignorant. Violence doesn''t work the way most people think. Read this book to learn some truth and get some reality on board.
I disagree with the very last part of the book. This book was written at a time when all experts agreed that the coming inevitable youth violence epidemic was going to be unprecedented, and these authors believed it too. Then... well, it just didn''t happen. Despite hyperbole and professional handwringing, random street violence is at a half-century low.
So, yeah, one failed prediction at the end of the book because the authors just don''t really understand video games. Whatver.
The rest of the book was masterful and fantastic.

This is, essentially the exact same review I have to give for "On Killing," and for the same reasons.

This is a books for pacifists A book for warriors and families of warriors of all walks: military, police, peace corps, firefighters, customs officers, first responders, teachers, parents and community leaders. A book for those who wish for stability and democracy. A book for those who doubt it. In the words of colleagues working at Homeboy Industries in Los Angeles: ”Hurt people hurt people” And to defend against this and maintain peace there will be times when there is no other option than to fight fire with fire. When that time comes we will want informed, prepared and morally grounded warriors. Life over death, justice over vengeance. P.S. We may all want to wake up to the toxicity of violent media and gaming when left unguided. Kids are warriors, just smaller.

He thinks the answer to escalating gun crime lies in ''biggering and biggering*'' the guns the authorities carry. This stuff overshadowed the interesting stuff.
