Description

Product Description

Playing off the themes in the Caldecott Medal-winning children''s book Where the Wild Things Are, this informative, practical, and encouraging guide will help parents guide boys down the path to healthy and authentic manhood. Wild Things addresses the physical, emotional, and spiritual parts of a boy, written by two therapists who are currently engaged in clinical work with boys and their parents and who are also fathers raising five sons. Contains chapters such as “Sit Still! Pay Attention!” “Deficits and Disappointments,” and “Rituals, Ceremonies, and Rites of Passage.”

Review

James, Stephen & David Thomas. Wild Things: The Art of Nurturing Boys. Tyndale House. Feb. 2009. c.351p. ISBN 978-1-4143-2227-8. pap. $14.99. CHILD REARING

This worthy, engaging owner''s manual on boys aged two to 22 is written from a reserved, supportive Christian perspective. With five sons between them, the authors (both therapists) view testosterone-fueled shenanigans with droll humor and encourage parents to remain calm when upsetting things inevitably occur. The authors aptly demonstrate their view that "[t]he older a boy gets, the more he needs from his caregivers." With real-life examples both mundane and dramatic, they discuss characteristics frequently shared among boys of similar ages and provide guidance on what boys need most during those stages. Practical direction (e.g., give young "Explorers" "space to roam"), along with encouragement to be open and honest when parenting, is constant. While some suggestions (e.g., monitoring MySpace accounts or backpack inspections) may alarm some at first, they are tempered by the authors'' admonition to "keep a watchful eye" and inform sons you''ll be doing so. The work effectively straddles William Sears''s attachment parenting and the more openly authoritative style of John Rosemond. In a crowded field, this work is highly recommended for all public libraries and for collections supporting teachers and the helping professions.--Douglas C. Lord, Connecticut State Lib., Hartford --Library Journal, February 2009

Review

"As a pediatrician I see parents everyday wrestling with how to understand and guide their sons. If you''re looking for practical parenting skills these pages are filled with sound advice. The authors break down each stage of a boy''s journey and it is filled with effective, simple tips that you can implement now. This book is one of the best parenting resources I''ve seen. " -- Dr Linda Brady, Pediatrician, Nashville "I loved this book! As a single mom for the past seven years, I couldn''t wait to dive into David and Stephen''s timely work. This mom of two wild things and two softer things needed their roadmap and driving instructions for the dangerous journey we are traveling. Bless you both for the wisdom you have given to me. May all our boys be nurtured and loved until they are the honorable men God intended for them to become." --Angela Thomas, Speaker and Best-selling author of My Single Mom Life. "David and Stephen have once again demonstrated the beauty and power of fraternal collaboration in their newest book, Mentoring Boys. If I didn''t know otherwise, I would assume these two guys were grand-dads, not young dads, when I consider the depth of wisdom and breadth of practical applications captured between the covers of this volume. How I wish I had this book when my son was younger, yet the same principles of loving well are applicable from generation to generation. If you want hope and not hype, but this book. It is a joy to unequivocally endorse it, and I look forward to putting it in the hands of many dads, and moms as well. " -- Scotty Smith, Founding Pastor Christ Community Church "God has entrusted a unique and powerful gift to Dave Thomas to understand the complex language of a boy''s heart and help interpret it for us who love them. This is an important book about a very important subject."

--Steven Curtis and Mary Beth Chapman

From the Back Cover

Born to be . . . wild! A boy''s endless imagination, hunger for adventure, and passionate spirit are matched only by his deep desire to be affirmed, esteemed, and loved. Yet over the past few decades, our culture has adopted a model of parenting and educating boys that doesn''t affirm, celebrate, or embrace a boy''s hunger, passion, or wildness but rather seeks to tame it. As a result, many parents, teachers, coaches, and mentors find themselves frustrated, confused, and wearied by boys'' behavior. The truth is, boys don''t need to be tamed-they need to be understood, loved, challenged, and encouraged. Wild Things helps parents, teachers, mentors, and others understand and explore the hearts, minds, and ways of boys-and the vital role that parents and caregivers play on the journey to manhood. Based on clinical research and filled with practical tips and suggestions, Wild Things gives fresh insight and much-needed encouragement on the road to raising boys.

I just finished reading this book. It has too many references to popular Hollywood movies that I personally don''t want to watch myself, and I wouldn''t recommend for young boys/men to watch either, because of too much worldly content and profanity, like Adam Sandler''s movies and others. Since the authors profess to be Christians and at least one of them a pastor, I was surprised to find little to no reference to the Bible or to other great Christian men from history. I liked their description of boys behavior and stages of maturity, however, this book lacks godly advise on how to raise boys in a Gospel centered way. One of the authors gave advise to get your children into school earlier which I highly disagree, and also for moms to be unpredictable and use jokes and games that are disrespectful. I just can''t understand. In my opinion, one of the best ways to help our boys is to read the Bible, good literature and biographies of godly men with them, instead of watching a bunch of Hollywood ungodly and profane movies! Very disappointed with this book.

I could not recommend this book enough. This is a must-read for parents of boys. As a mom of three boys (in three different stages of development as described by the authors) that still asks often “Is this normal?”, this book has been so helpful in understanding the “why” behind many of the things that they do. This book has so many helpful, practical examples to implement to truly understand and be a nurturer to our boys. I found myself laughing out loud at the personal stories because so many were things that we have experienced or could have experienced in our home. As an educator that really did not understand how to best teach boys before having my own, I found the educational implications so fascinating and heartbreaking too. This book filled me with hope and encouraged me that even in what feels like the chaotic moments of life with three little, energetic boys that to truly understand them (and educate others in doing the same) we can help them grow to maturity embracing their unique design as boys. As a Christian and pastor’s wife, I also felt that some of the one star reviews were unfair and did not find this book was “worldly” at all in nature but used movie examples, for example, to portray boys and the way that they behave in different stages of development. This is my favorite book about boys that I have ever read!

I have recommended this book to numerous friends. I love how the authors provide information about how boys develop differently from the moment of conception. I love how the ages are broken down into groups and the authors give you information on what you can expect to see developmentally in your child, what your child needs, and practical tips to help you during that stage. This is a book I will keep until my boys are grown. I know I will pull it off the shelf during each stage my boys grow through, since my guys are only 4 and 2 at this point. The book is dripping with an itty bitty bit of bible truth ;) but if you aren''t into the spiritual aspect I firmly believe this is still a must read for parents with boys. No matter what age your boy(s) is you can truly benefit from the insight and practical tips.

I was looking for a highly rated parenting book and I came across this one in my search. And based off all the positive reviews this book received here, I decided to buy it. It does not disappoint. Every parent with a boy should read this book. It helped me grasp some patience for my boys from understanding how a boy is hardwired. Such a great read. This is my 3rd parenting book and the only one I’ve finished reading front to back. Highly recommend!

There are references to God and the Bible throughout this book. I was very disappointed, especially as the book was categorized under ''parenting'' rather than ''religion''. As someone who has gone through religion related trauma, I find any overt references to Christianity very antagonizing and I would never choose to read a book written from such a perspective. I have had to throw this book away unread, and would discourage any non-Christian from purchasing it. Why the authors couldn''t simply write a book about raising boys without shoving their beliefs down the readers throat is beyond me.
